Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated worldwide on June 5th. However, for Uganda, this year’s National World Environment Day celebrations have been postponed to today, June 25, 2025, at Kigezi High Primary School grounds in Kabale. H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, is expected to be the Guest of Honor. The day’s theme, “United Against Plastic Pollution,” resonates deeply within our context—a country rich in biodiversity and natural resources yet increasingly threatened by the pervasive issue of plastic waste. This year’s theme serves as an urgent call for collective action to combat plastic pollution, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable practices that protect our environment and promote a healthier future for all.
Uganda, like many nations, faces significant challenges related to plastic waste. With a rapidly growing population of approximately 45.9 million, the demand for convenience products packaged in plastic has surged. Unfortunately, this convenience comes at a cost. According to recent studies, Uganda generates over 600,000 tons of plastic waste annually, with only a fraction being properly recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, water bodies, and the natural environment, leading to devastating consequences for wildlife, ecosystems, and human health.
The impact of plastic pollution is particularly evident in urban areas, where inadequate waste management systems exacerbate the problem. In cities like Kampala, only about 45% of waste is collected and managed properly. This not only contributes to environmental degradation but also poses serious health risks to communities, especially those living near polluted water sources.
In response to this pressing issue, Atacama Consulting Foundation (ACF) is committed to taking action against plastic pollution through a multifaceted approach that aligns with our mission to drive sustainable development in Uganda. Our initiatives are designed to address the root causes of plastic waste while promoting community engagement and awareness. These include educational campaigns, waste management initiatives, promoting circular economy practices, community clean-up drives, and advocacy for policy change.
As we commemorate World Environment Day 2025, let us unite against plastic pollution and commit to creating a cleaner, healthier environment for current and future generations. The challenge of plastic waste may seem daunting, but through collective action, education, and sustainable practices, we can make a significant difference. The Atacama Consulting Foundation invites all Ugandans to join us in this vital mission. Together, we can protect our beautiful landscapes, safeguard our biodiversity, and ensure that Uganda remains a vibrant and thriving nation for years to come.
Let’s take action today—because our planet deserves better.
